FATF

The Financial Action Task Force is an intergovernmental body that sets global AML and counter-terror finance standards, heavily influencing crypto regulation.

FATF issues recommendations rather than law, but member states transpose them under peer-review pressure, and grey-listing carries economic cost. Its crypto guidance defined virtual asset service providers and extended the Travel Rule to them.

The practical effect is regulatory convergence: KYC thresholds, VASP registration, and transfer-data requirements look similar across jurisdictions because they descend from the same recommendations.
