UTXO

An unspent transaction output is a discrete chunk of cryptocurrency in Bitcoin-like systems. Wallet privacy depends heavily on how these outputs are spent and merged.

Coins in Bitcoin-like systems are discrete outputs with visible ancestry. Spending several outputs together asserts common ownership to every chain observer, which is the heuristic most clustering builds on.

Coin control, offered by capable wallets, chooses which outputs a payment spends and keeps histories apart; consolidation sweeps do the opposite and are permanently visible. The UTXO guide documents the practice.
