Hardening Telegram

Telegram stores ordinary chats in its cloud. Those chats are encrypted in transit and at rest, but they are not end-to-end encrypted. Only one-to-one Secret Chats keep message keys on the participants' devices.

Know the limit

Account settings can reduce exposure. They cannot make Telegram groups, channels or ordinary cloud chats end-to-end encrypted.

1. Use Secret Chats for sensitive messages

Start a Secret Chat from the other person's profile. Telegram says Secret Chats use end-to-end encryption, are not stored in its cloud and can only be opened on the devices that created them. They do not support groups and do not sync to other devices.

2. Lock down phone-number discovery

Open Settings, then Privacy and Security, then Phone Number. Set who can see your number to Nobody. Restrict who can find you by your number to My Contacts if that option is available on your account. A public username lets people contact you without seeing the number.

Telegram still receives the number used as the account identifier. Its privacy policy also says synced contacts are stored until you stop contact syncing or delete them under Privacy and Security, then Data Settings.

3. Add a second login factor

Enable Two-Step Verification under Privacy and Security. This adds a password to login codes, reducing the damage from a stolen SIM or intercepted code. Add a recovery email you control and secure that mailbox with its own strong authentication.

Review Devices or Active Sessions and terminate sessions you do not recognise. A second factor does not remove an attacker who already controls an active session.

4. Reduce stored data

Disable contact syncing if you do not need it, then delete previously synced contacts. Set an auto-delete timer for new chats and apply it to existing chats where appropriate. Deletion reduces what remains in the chat history, but recipients can still copy, forward or capture anything they receive.

5. Treat bots and optional processing as third parties

Telegram's policy says bot developers can receive public account data and any messages or files you send to their bots. Optional translation and voice transcription may send selected text or audio to outside processors. Do not send a bot data you would not give its operator directly.

6. Understand metadata and legal requests

Telegram says it may collect IP addresses, device details, app information and username-change history for security and abuse prevention, with a maximum retention period of 12 months when collected. Its policy says a valid judicial order may lead to disclosure of an account's phone number and IP address after legal review.

A SOCKS5 or MTProto proxy can keep your direct IP address from Telegram. It moves trust to the proxy operator and does nothing to encrypt cloud-chat content end to end.

SIM-free registration has trade-offs

Fragment collectible numbers can create a Telegram account without a SIM card. Fragment says these +888 numbers work only with Telegram and receive login codes through Fragment. Buying one requires a TON wallet, and ownership transfers are recorded on the public TON blockchain. SIM-free does not mean untraceable. Wallet funding and blockchain activity can create their own links.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Telegram end-to-end encrypted?

Only Secret Chats use end-to-end encryption. Telegram stores ordinary cloud chats on its servers so they remain available across devices. Secret Chats work only between two users and stay on the devices that created them.

Can I hide my phone number on Telegram?

You can restrict who sees your phone number and who can find your account by number. Telegram still uses a phone number as the account identifier unless you register with a Fragment collectible number.

What data can Telegram disclose to authorities?

Telegram says it may disclose a phone number and IP address after legal analysis of a valid judicial order concerning suspected criminal activity that violates its terms. Its policy says IP address, device, app and username-change metadata may be retained for up to 12 months.

Does a proxy make Telegram private?

A proxy can hide your direct IP address from Telegram, but it does not turn cloud chats into end-to-end encrypted messages. The proxy operator can also observe connection metadata. Use Secret Chats or a messenger with end-to-end encryption enabled by default for sensitive conversations.
